PayPal reopens inbound payments for Nigerians via Paga

PayPal has gone live in Nigeria through a new partnership with local fintech Paga, giving Nigerians a feature many have waited years for, which is the ability to receive international payments and access the money locally.

Under the arrangement, users can link their PayPal accounts to their Paga wallets, receive funds through PayPal-supported markets, and convert and withdraw in naira through Paga.

Paga’s founder and Group CEO, Tayo Oviosu, said the collaboration is a full-circle moment, coming nearly 13 years after he first approached PayPal in 2013 with a proposal for how the companies could work together in Nigeria.

For context, PayPal’s relationship with Nigeria has been heavily restricted for years. Nigerian accounts were largely placed on “send-only” status, limiting the ability to receive funds, an issue that pushed freelancers, digital workers, and small online businesses toward alternative platforms and workarounds.

The new setup is expected to ease those friction points, especially for freelancers and entrepreneurs who earn from overseas clients, as well as merchants looking to sell to global customers.

The move also fits into PayPal’s broader push to connect its network with local digital wallets to make cross-border payments easier in more markets.
